The Ann Arbor T-shirt Company, comprising around 48 artists, screen printers, art technicians, logistics professionals, embroiderers, and support staff, is based in Ann Arbor, Michigan. We are proud to design, print, and embroider the majority of our products entirely in our own factory.
Our company's origins trace back to a dorm room project between two friends at the University of Michigan. What sets our products apart is our commitment to fair labor practices - we provide our employees with subsidized healthcare, 401(k) matching, company sports teams, catered lunches, and quarterly celebrations around town. We believe that treating our workers with respect is not only the right thing to do, but also makes good business sense, as happy employees create better shirts with cooler art, superior printing, and more exacting quality control.
From top to bottom, our team takes great pride in the products we produce and are eager to share them with our customers. Our shirts are made of 100% USA-grown cotton, with a ringspun, 30/1 fine jersey knit that is soft, smooth, and durable, yet not too thick or see-through. The fabric is pre-shrunk, but may still shrink slightly in the wash, like any high-cotton garment.
We use high-quality QCM screen printing inks, manufactured in Pineville, North Carolina. These inks are vibrant, durable, and highly crack-resistant. Some of our designs feature intentionally faded or cracked effects, but our skilled printers ensure that the inks always perform as intended. Our printing equipment, including top-of-the-line presses and ovens made by M&R in Roselle, Illinois, helps us properly cure the inks and maintain exceptional quality.
QCM, our ink supplier, has been a pioneer in the industry, going phthalate-free over a decade ago, well ahead of the curve. Their inks are also CFC-free and rated as carcinogen-free by the state of California, ensuring the safety of our production processes and the final products.
Our shirts have a modern, slightly tapered fit that is less boxy than traditional mass-market t-shirts. Most people will find their regular size to be a good fit, but those who prefer a looser look may want to size up. The tagless label is printed directly on the fabric inside the collar, making it unnoticeable to the wearer.
Ultimately, we love creating fun and expressive apparel that helps people connect with their communities and strike up conversations with their neighbors. If you're ever in the Ann Arbor area, we invite you to stop by for a free tour and see firsthand how we craft your favorite shirts.
